From Lyrics to Music Video Visualisation



Stages of production






The initial idea - premise, pitch, synopsis, treatment

Analysis - intertextual reference, postmodernity, auteurism, ideology, representation

Visualising process - mood board, storyboard

Script - original script, script with director's notes

Pre-filming prep - collating resources, casting, shot list, equipment list

Recce shoot - risk assessment, location scout, rehearsals

Production - camera, lighting, sound, production design, acting, chain of demand, rushes

Post-production/editing - rough cut, effects, grade and colour

Distribution and marketing - social media, press coverage, finding an audience, targeting sales

Today's lesson

Objective: to consolidate learning after the practice exam

- Discussion and in-depth evaluation of a pupil's exam paper
• Mind map of genre conventions – choose a genre to research in depth, mise-en-scene of an example music video, discuss typical iconography/symbolism/motifs of genre, discuss intertextual influence and relevant sub-generic movements
• 1:1 tuition with each pupil on their exam (Monday)
• Blog to-do – catch up on missing links (keep going)
• Reflection on feminism, media representation and introduction to Marxism (create a blog)

Postmodernism and Ideology

Objective: to deconstruct the representation of ideology
in relation to gender, politics and news broadcasting

Task: Create a brief evaluation in order to answer
these questions applying the key terms appropriately.



Introduction: Media representation has a massive part to play
in the molding and conditioning of people in society.
Consider recent reports on 'terrorism' along with the
representation of women in media and evaluate how propaganda
can have a positive or negative impact on society.

What responsibility does mass media have in
shaping the ideologies of its audience?

How has media sensationalism affected the politics of society?

How could feminist critique of media representation
be seen as an example of positive propaganda?

What influence could you have to change the frame of media representation?
